When pain that won't go away outlasts the injury

Acute pain, like a minor ankle sprain, settles in days or weeks. Pain that won't go away for three months or more is called chronic. Persistent pain can come from overuse, disease, surgery or an accident, and it can hold back your mobility and mood.

In many people, long-term pain is tied to a nervous system that has stayed on high alert. This is called central sensitization: the alarm system turns up its volume, so ordinary movement can hurt even after the tissue has healed.

Where chronic pain starts

Overuse

Standing, lifting or working the same way every day can wear tissue down.

Disease

Conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia can keep pain going.

Surgery

Compensating for pain after an operation can cause new aches.

Accidents

Falls, car crashes and workplace injuries can leave pain behind.

Why moving helps more than resting

Rest feels safe, but long rest weakens muscles and makes the nervous system more protective. Graded activity starts at a level you can manage and increases slowly, so your body learns that movement is safe.

We also teach activity pacing, which means spreading effort through the day so good days do not cost you bad ones. We explain how pain works, in plain language, so a flare feels less frightening.

What we do at Joint Effort for long-term pain

Your physical therapist evaluates weak areas, limited range of motion and imbalances in gait or standing, to find what is behind the pain. Your plan combines in-clinic care with a home program.

Care includes pain neuroscience education, graded activity, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy to ease soft tissue and joint movement, and dry needling when tight muscles are part of the picture. Pain-relieving modalities such as electrical stimulation can help you tolerate exercise.

Non-surgical pain relief and pain management without opioids

Physical therapy is a non-drug, non-surgical option, and we can work alongside medical care.

  • We do not prescribe medication; we focus on movement, strength and understanding pain
  • Progress is measured in function first: walking farther, sleeping better, doing more
  • We keep your doctor or pain specialist informed about how you are doing
  • We never ask you to stop medication; talk with your prescriber about any change

Pain in one area, or all over

When chronic pain centers on one body part, read about back pain, neck pain or pelvic pain. Widespread pain with fatigue is covered under fibromyalgia.
