Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a form of electrical stimulation that moves medication through the skin to a sore area using a small patch. At our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic, Rob Jordan, PT, uses it in some specialized treatment plans for problems such as bursitis, tendinitis and scar tissue.

How the patch works

Before treatment starts, your physical therapist decides which medication fits your condition. Some medications may need a prescription from your doctor.

The medication goes onto the patch, which has a built-in battery and two electrodes, one positive and one negative. Depending on the medicine, it is placed on one side or the other. When the patch is on your skin, the current helps push the medicine into the sore area, which may help with pain and recovery.

What it feels like

Patients often ask whether it hurts. It should not.

During

You wear the patch for a set amount of time that depends on the medication. Some patches are worn for as long as 24 hours. You may feel a slight tingling where the patch sits.

After

When you take the patch off, the skin underneath may look a little red. That is normal. Your physical therapist decides what other treatment follows.

What it is used for

Bursitis

For irritated, painful tissue around a joint such as the shoulder or hip.

Tendinitis

For sore, irritated tendons, as in Elbow Pain (Tennis & Golfer's Elbow) or Shoulder Pain.

Scar tissue

As one part of managing scar tissue after surgery or injury.

Is it right for you?

Iontophoresis is not part of every plan. It is used when the evaluation shows it suits your condition. Your therapist can tell you at your first visit whether it is worth considering, and it is often combined with Therapeutic Exercise and Electrical Stimulation Therapy style care for the same area.
