General Muscle Weakness

General muscle weakness shows up as trouble getting up from a low chair, standing for a long time or walking long distances. Physical therapy can help find which muscle groups are involved and rebuild strength. Rob Jordan, PT, treats it at our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic.

Why muscles lose strength

Muscle mass and strength can drop when you are sedentary, when your activity level changes, after pregnancy, after an injury or after surgery. Things we used to take for granted get harder.

Why strength matters

Support for your joints

Your muscles make you move and support your skeleton and joints. Poor strength and control put abnormal strain on your joints, ligaments and tendons.

Whole-body health

Strain also affects the heart, lungs and digestive system. Being weak and inactive significantly increases the risk of heart problems, diabetes and stroke, so it is worth acting on.

How physical therapy helps

When you are in pain, injured, weak or deconditioned, it is important to identify which muscle groups are involved. Physical therapists are trained to do this. Your problems are evaluated and a plan is put together to gently build your strength and function.

We also teach you what to do to maintain your strength and prevent future problems. Your plan is built mostly on Therapeutic Exercise, and may use Neuromuscular Re-Education to retrain movement. If weakness follows surgery, see Post-Surgical Rehab; if it relates to age, see Geriatric Therapy.
