Total Joint Replacement
Physical therapy after a knee, hip or shoulder replacement helps restore your range of motion, strength and mobility. It can also help before surgery. Rob Jordan, PT, provides joint replacement rehabilitation at our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic.
Why joint replacement is recommended
Surgery is typically considered for people who have:
- Severe joint damage, usually from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
- Severe trauma to a joint, where some injuries can only be addressed surgically
- Chronic shooting pain that affects daily life when nothing else has helped
Thinking about surgery
If you think you may need a joint replacement, talk with your primary physician first. If you have already had one, your physician will likely refer you to a physical therapist for part of your recovery.
Physical therapy can also help people who live with disabling joint pain but have not had surgery yet. See Arthritis & Joint Pain and Hip Pain or Knee Pain.
Before and after the procedure
Physical therapy can help on both sides of surgery, to make recovery as smooth as possible.
Before
A plan can work on range of motion, flexibility and strength ahead of the procedure.
After
Your plan restores range of motion, flexibility, strength, endurance and overall mobility. See Post-Surgical Rehab.
How recovery with us is organized
Evaluation
Your first visit is a physical evaluation to decide which course of treatment suits your needs.
Passive phase
At first, treatment focuses on pain relief and recovery. It may include Manual Therapy, gentle Therapeutic Exercise or another combination your therapist chooses.
Active phase
You then move on to strengthening exercises done with your therapist, plus home exercises you do on your own, to make recovery as comfortable as possible and improve normal function.
