Therapeutic Exercise
Therapeutic exercise is a plan of targeted movements that helps restore strength, flexibility, balance and function. It is not only for people recovering from surgery. Rob Jordan, PT, designs each plan for the person in front of him at our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic.
Why rest is not always the answer
Many people think they should rest when they are in pain. But too much rest can let muscles weaken during recovery, which may lead to less function and more pain later.
Physical therapists are movement experts, trained in improving strength, range of motion and overall function. Your therapist builds an individual plan with the exercises you need to strengthen weak areas, support recovery and restore function.
Six kinds of exercise your plan may draw on
Muscle performance
Resistance and endurance work to build strength and power without injury. Strength matters for balance, stability and bone and joint health.
Balance and coordination
Standing, walking, cooking and brushing your teeth all rely on balance. This is especially important after an injury or illness.
Posture
Long hours at a desk and poor habits can lead to pain. These exercises work on posture in daily life, not only during exercise. See Ergonomic Training.
Range of motion
Active, passive or assisted stretching to help joints and soft tissues move better and with less pain.
Area-specific
Work aimed at breathing and circulation, which can help blood flow and lower stress on the body.
Relaxation
Muscles need to relax as well as work. Heat, cold, electrical stimulation, massage or trigger point therapy may help you relax and sleep.
Done in the clinic, then at home
Exercise programs aim to improve health. Therapeutic exercise goes further with activities that target your pain and your goals. It can also help prevent more impairment when you are facing certain physical risks.
Our physical therapists guide you in the clinic, and your plan carries on at home.

Where exercise fits with the rest of your care
Exercise is the backbone of nearly every plan, from Back Pain and Knee Pain to Post-Surgical Rehab recovery and General Muscle Weakness. It works hand in hand with Manual Therapy and Neuromuscular Re-Education.
