Neuromuscular Re-Education

Neuromuscular re-education is how physical therapists help restore normal movement patterns after injury, surgery or a neurological condition has thrown them off. Rob Jordan, PT, uses it at our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic for patients whose muscles no longer move the way they used to.

Why movement patterns need retraining

Your nerves and muscles work as a team. Nerves tell your muscles where, when and how fast to move, and over time those patterns are learned and stored in memory.

Trauma, surgery, pain, swelling and some medical or neurological conditions can disrupt the pattern. Muscles may stop working in the right order, your posture can slip, and movement becomes abnormal even after the original problem settles.

What the treatment is made of

Your plan may include any of these, chosen for the area being treated:

  • Manual techniques, including proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
  • Activities for balance and core control
  • Therapeutic exercises designed to rebuild normal, controlled movement patterns

Why it comes before strength

A joint needs full motion to work well, and the nervous system has to relearn the pattern before strength can be built on top of it.

Loss of motion

When a joint is tender and stiff, it can lose motion. Without full range of motion, weakness and limits in daily tasks tend to develop, usually over several weeks to months if the problem is not treated properly.

Loss of control

Pain, swelling and surgery can leave you with less feel for where a body part is and how it is moving. Rebuilding that sense is a key step before strength training will carry over to real movement.

Keeping a short problem short

Using the right techniques and exercises early on an injured area can help keep a recent injury from turning into a long-term one.

Where it fits in your care

This work shows up in many plans, including Post-Surgical Rehab recovery, Vestibular Rehab / Dizziness & Balance and balance problems, and Back Pain and Neck Pain where posture and control matter. It is closely tied to Therapeutic Exercise.

We look at the whole patient and address every part of the problem, so you can reach your best level of function in everyday activities.
