How a therapeutic laser works

This laser therapy floods the injured area with light energy. That light stimulates damaged cells and increases circulation to the painful area, which may help the body reduce inflammation and support its own recovery.

It is non-invasive, and treatments are brief. Your therapist chooses the type and strength of the laser after your evaluation and medical history review. It is one tool in a plan of care that includes exercise and hands-on work, not a replacement for them.

A laser visit, step by step

Laser therapy physical therapy sessions are short and quiet.

  • Treatments typically last 2 to 10 minutes
  • Little or no sensation, or a gentle, soothing warmth
  • No pain from the laser itself
  • It is applied to the skin, directly over the area, with care to keep light away from the eyes
  • Patients may begin to notice changes after a few sessions; your therapist sets the total number with you

Laser can be used for acute and chronic problems. Your therapist decides after an evaluation of your history.

Joints and active people

Laser therapy for arthritis, bursitis and soft tissue damage is also on that list, along with arthritis and sports injuries.

Your therapist reviews your health history before the first treatment.
