Myofascial Release

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on treatment that uses slow, sustained pressure on tight muscle and fascia to ease tension and pain. Joint Effort Physical Therapy offers myofascial release therapy in Hot Springs, Arkansas for people whose stiff or tight muscles limit daily life.

Fascia, fascial tightness and myofascial pain

Fascia is the thin connective tissue that wraps your muscles, and fascia release is how many people describe this care. When a muscle is irritated or overworked, the fascia around it can tighten, and that fascial tightness can limit movement and hurt. The pain that results is called myofascial pain.

Our therapists focus on the pressure points that matter for your pain, working to bring tight tissue back toward a more elastic state. The result you are after is easier, less painful movement.

Trigger points and referred pain

Much of myofascial pain traces to trigger points.

What they are

Trigger points are tender knots in a tight muscle. Trigger point therapy finds them and works pressure into them until the muscle eases.

Why pain shows up elsewhere

A knot in one muscle can send pain to a different spot, which is why a headache can trace back to the neck and shoulders. Your therapist looks at the whole area, not only where it hurts.

When needles help

For stubborn knots your therapist may suggest dry needling in addition to hands-on work, if your evaluation supports it.

Myofascial release compared with massage

Massage

Often broad and relaxing. Soft tissue massage is also part of our manual therapy, used with a medical purpose.

Myofascial release

Targeted and sustained. The therapist holds pressure on the restricted tissue and the specific points your evaluation identified, rather than working the whole region.

What a session feels like

Specific timing is set at your evaluation. In general:

  • Steady, firm pressure on the tight area, not a quick rub
  • A feeling of release or tenderness at trigger points that eases as pressure is held
  • Some muscle soreness afterward is possible
  • Your therapist adjusts pressure to what you can tolerate

Conditions it is used for, and how it fits your plan

Myofascial release is used for myofascial pain syndrome, muscle stiffness after injury, chronic headaches and migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint disorder and venous insufficiency. Look at the pages for neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and chronic pain to see how hands-on care fits.

It is not a stand-alone fix. Your plan pairs release work with exercise so the muscles keep the movement you gain. Myofascial release makes no claim to remove toxins or stored emotion; it is about tightness and pain.
