Geriatric Therapy
Geriatric physical therapy helps older adults move more comfortably, lower their risk of falls and keep doing what matters to them. If you or a parent is dealing with pain or limits that come with age, Rob Jordan, PT, can help at our Hot Springs, Arkansas clinic.
Bodies change, and care should change with them
The way we move at 25 is different from 50, and different again from 80. Injuries, ailments and years of wear and tear add up. Geriatric physical therapy assesses and treats the discomfort many older adults feel as a result.
It is an umbrella term for treatment of a broad range of issues that come with age. It generally focuses on older adults, but it can be used for any age-related condition in an adult.
Conditions it often addresses
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Joint replacement
- Balance and gait problems
- Neurological disorders
- Incontinence
- Cancer
- Alzheimer's disease
Three parts of a plan
Manual therapy
Hands-on treatment, such as massage and joint or muscle manipulation, to ease pain, restore motion and increase circulation. See Manual Therapy.
Exercise
Targeted exercises for strength, coordination, flexibility, balance and endurance. Walking, stretching and light weight lifting are common, and exercise helps lower the risk of falling. See Therapeutic Exercise.
Education
Tips and techniques for doing daily tasks safely, using assistive devices and preventing further injury, so progress holds after treatment.
