Why start physical therapy

A healthy, active life is not always easy to get, especially with chronic pain. Some people try to mask symptoms with pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medication, and others give up on being active. Physical therapy is another option.

It can apply whether a past injury still lingers, you are recovering from surgery and trying to get your range of motion back, or your joints are not what they used to be.

Three phases of a typical plan

Physical therapy generally has three phases. They overlap, and your therapist moves you along when you are ready.

  1. Pain relief

Ice and heat, stretching, bracing and Therapeutic Ultrasound are among the tools for easing pain. Your plan is designed not to bring you pain or discomfort.

  2. Strengthening

Specific movements to build strength, flexibility, balance and mobility. Your therapist helps with many of them, and gives you some simple ones for home. See Therapeutic Exercise.

  3. Functional integration

Applying what you learn to everyday life, so the gains carry outside the clinic.

What your first evaluation involves

There is no cookie-cutter plan. Your therapist works with you to look at the following.

What we look at

Your mobility, balance, range of motion and how severe your pain is. Your physical goals and any health risks that may be holding you back are also considered.

What you may be asked to do

Basic movements such as sitting down, standing up, walking, lifting or stretching, so the therapist can see how you move.

What follows

With a clear picture of your needs, the therapist builds a treatment plan to ease your pain and reach your goals.

Find your condition

A physical therapist is a movement specialist who analyzes problems with walking, running, bending, stretching and nearly every other activity. If you already know what is bothering you, start with Back Pain, Knee Pain, Shoulder Pain or Chronic Pain, or read about Manual Therapy and Post-Surgical Rehab care.
